Wattens, Austria–Jewelry in 2008 will take inspiration from four major themes: nature, architecture, mysticism and romance, according to Gem Visions, a new compilation of design trends put out by Signity.

The themes characterize the four dominant categories in Signity`s fifth annual report, which describes 2008 as a year to celebrate gemstones and jewelry as powerful charms and status symbols.

Researched by trend and jewelry experts, Gem Visions attempts to place gemstones in the context of major international, social, cultural and lifestyle trends.

Signity`s four trends for 2008 are as follows:

Origem: "Origem" jewelry takes inspiration from the earth–from the sculptural appearance of landscapes and from the many textures and colors of the natural world. The trend makes use of natural gemstones and minerals as well as materials such as shells, bones and horns. It appeals to eco-conscious and fashion-forward customers. The color palette includes earth tones heightened by iridescent whites. Key colors are fern green, smoky gray and light, earth-tone browns.

Bluematrix: "Bluematrix" jewelry finds inspiration in sleek, modern architecture, particularly in soaring skyscrapers with tall, elongated shapes. The trend appears in futuristic, geometric designs such as gem grids or interlocking elements. It appeals to a design-conscious market. A cool color palette revolves around a range of blues.

Mysticglam: The most ornate of the four trends, "Mysticglam" melds a gothic, medieval flavor with a more modern glam-rock sensibility. The large, imposing jewels appear heavily decorated with symbols of magic and mystery. The trend appeals to jewelry-lovers and to those interested in statement-making accessories. Color schemes are dark and intense, marked by emerald, ruby, sapphire and amethyst jewel tones as well as darkly hued pearls.

iRomance: While feminine at its core, "iRomance" incorporates both high-tech and high-fashion influences into each of its designs. The jewelry features tiny stones or clusters of gems in multicolored palettes, and appeals to high-fashion customers looking for everyday jewelry. The palette features extreme hues in a range of shades.

In addition to forecasting, Signity offers gem products that will fit with the trends. This year`s gems include golden-hued passion topaz honey and spiral-cut white topaz. New cuts include the floral "petal" and assymetrical "bizarre" square cuts.

To get customers to try new trends:
* Have your staff wear it: A customer may not appreciate a trend until she sees how it looks when she wears it.
* Don`t write anyone off: Just because a woman wears conservative jewelry doesn`t mean she has no desire to test-drive a new trend.
* Know your market: If you live in a fashion-obsessed community, jump on the latest trends. Otherwise, wait for the trends to trickle down.
* Showcase collections together: Use your displays to show customers how trendier pieces work together to create a cohesive look.
* Focus on the females: Women buying for themselves, rather than men seeking to buy a gift, will more easily opt for a new trend.
