Japan's Polished Diamond Imports Rise, End Negative Run

RAPAPORT… Japan’s imports of polished diamonds grew 1.2 percent to $61.54 million in August 2007 ending a 12-month run of consecutive declines in the country’s diamond imports.

Japan’s polished imports have declined 15.4 percent to $594.82 million in the first eight months of the year.

The negative trend continued however in August when counting by volume, as Japan’s polished imports fell 9.1 percent to 178,394 carats for the month, and by 19.6 percent to 1.5 million carats for the year to date.

India remained the most popular source of Japan’s polished imports accounting for 60 percent of the total in August. Japanese diamond imports from India grew 31.4 percent to $37.44 million for the month. The United States, China, Hong and Thailand were other growth markets for Japan in August, while imports from Belgium fell 45.9 percent to $5.6 million, and those from Israel declined 54.6 percent to $2.8 million.

Japan’s gold jewelry imports fell 9.9 percent to $57.64 million in August and by 5.2 percent to $509.11 million in the first eight months of 2007. Silver jewelry imports rose 7.9 percent to $25.04 million for the month but have decreased by 7.3 percent to $162.09 million for the year so far. Japan imported 33.6 percent more platinum jewelry compared to a year earlier bringing in $38.13 million worth in August 2007. Platinum imports remained flat for the year to date at $278.18 million.

Japanese imports of ruby, sapphire, and emerald stones fell 32.1 percent to $2.78 million for the month while pearl imports decreased 16.1 percent to $19.11 million. For the category of "other colored stones," imports fell 22.3 percent to $5.4 million.
